Bangs are a versatile and stylish way to change up your look and add flair to your hairstyle. Whether you have straight, curly, thick, or fine hair, there is a type of bangs that will complement your hair texture and face shape. From soft and wispy fringe to bold and blunt bangs, there are endless options to choose from. In this guide, we’ll explore 20 different types of bangs that are perfect for every hair texture and face shape, helping you find the perfect style to suit your individual look.

I got bangs a little over a year ago and I love them. It can be a bit of work to keep up with all different types of bangs, but once I learned how to cut them myself and figured out exactly what type was easy to style, the upkeep went way down.

For me, bangs enhance just about every hairstyle. It’s now super easy to throw my hair up in a messy bun and still look cute, but they add just as much character when I have my hair curled and brushed.

At first, it was quite a learning curve. I remember crying more than once the first week I got my bangs because I just couldn’t figure out how to make them work.

I’m going to put every bit of information that I know into this post so that the same thing won’t happen to you! Feel free to reach out in the comments with any questions if you’re still confused.

I’ll also include some different types of bangs (in photograph form) below and talk about what makes them look good. Feel free to scroll down to that section if you’d like!

How To Decide What Types Of Bangs To Get:

I’ll go over this a lot under each of the photos but for now, keep in mind that there are a few different things that you need to remember when it comes to bangs.

These are the variables that make different types of bangs unique from each other:

Firstly, the length is really important. Short bangs generally fall above the eyebrows, medium length bangs fall above the eyes, and long bangs fall on or below the eyes. I like the look of long bangs best, but they’re also really annoying in daily life; there’s many factors to consider.

Secondly, the thickness is equally as important. You can have super thing bangs (literally a few wisps of hair) or thick, blunt bangs that cover half your face. Your choice will depend on what you actually like as well as your face shape and daily routine; heavier bangs are easier to care for than thin bangs.

Lastly, the angle of the bangs matters quite a bit. Are your bangs angled to frame your face with long pieces on the edges? Are they one length and bluntly cut, or are they one length but jagged?

If this seems confusing, don’t worry: go through the examples below and you’ll see what I mean.

P.S. If you’re having trouble styling your bangs and need tips, keep scrolling – I’ll give my best tips to fix terrible looking bangs, greasy bangs, and more below these photos.

Different Types Of Bangs:

Here are 20+ different types of bangs! I’ll talk about what makes them unique how to cut each specific type below the photos.

20. Medium-Short Choppy Bangs

types of bangs: medium

These types of bangs are cut right around the eyebrows. They’re relatively thick and aren’t angled (they’re just straight across) but there is a bit of chop to the ends.

Out of all the different types of bangs on this list these may be the easiest to style. You really don’t have to do much to them unless your hair has a lot of texture of is ultra-curly. For most medium to thick hair types, these bangs will work quite well.

19. Medium Blunt Bangs

types of bangs: medium

This is what pretty blunt bangs will look like. I find that these types of bangs work really well with a chiseled face; they accentuate nice cheekbones. They also work with straighter, thicker hair.

These bangs aren’t angled at all; they’re simply straight across.

18. Medium Semi-Choppy Bangs

types of bangs: medium

These types of bangs work well with almost any hair type. I definitely recommend these if you have thin hair! They’re not angled but are straight across, although there is a bit of choppiness in the ends of these bangs.

These types of bangs are medium in thickness.

17. Thick & Jagged Bangs

types of bangs: medium

If you want really thick, choppy bangs then this is a great example. These bangs are mostly straight across.

Keep in mind that with thicker bangs, you’ll need to up the amount of eye makeup that you use or your eyes may get hidden. I find that these types of bangs can be super cute with glasses as well!

Thick bangs are the easiest to style because you don’t need to make them sit on your forehead just right.

16. Medium-Thick Choppy Bangs

types of bangs: medium

If you have watched or heard about the show Normal People then you know just how popular these bangs are! Marianne has the absolute coolest hairstyle.

For most of the show (including when this photo was taken), Marianne’s bangs are medium-thick and super choppy. Her stylist said that she literally started chopping away at random!

These bangs are also slightly angled, meaning that the pieces furthest from her face are a bit longer than those in the middle of the forehead.

This is one of my favorite different types of bangs because it’s super easy to style on a daily basis.

15. Angled Wispy Bangs

types of bangs: medium

These bangs are straight across on most of her forehead then they sharply angle into thick side pieces. They would look super cute with the hair up too, which makes these bangs really versatile!

These types of bangs are medium in thickness. I think this style works for most face shapes and is trendy but easy to care for. If you’re unsure about where to start, I recommend going with this look.

14. Angled Choppy Bangs

types of bangs: medium

This is a vintage look that I absolutely love. These bangs are thin and choppy with lots of angling around the face.

I like how these types of bangs are pretty easy to style, even though they’re thin. They also work well with curly or wavy hair.

13. Short Blunt Bangs

types of bangs: medium

Here’s a great example of short, blunt bangs that are super cute! The key is that her bangs aren’t super thick, so they don’t look like what we all had back in middle school. Instead, they’re edgy and feminine.

There are a few angled pieces around her face, although the majority of the bangs are straight across. These types of bangs are pretty easy to style for those of you who don’t want a lot of upkeep.

12. Jagged Angled Bangs

types of bangs: medium

I love these super choppy bangs! They’re also easy to style because you want the messy look.

To get this look, you need angled bangs that are chopped and on the thinner side, although you don’t want them wispy. This will work for medium or thick hair and looks great on virtually any face shape.

11. Medium Thin Angled Bangs

types of bangs: medium

I absolutely love this look! It’s relatively difficult to care for but is super trendy right now. These are barely chopped bangs with a lot of angling to frame the face. They also look best when the rest of the hair is worn up so that the bangs are accentuated.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to wear a decent amount of eye makeup with these types of bangs or your eyes will get totally hidden.

10. Medium Curly Bangs

types of bangs: medium

This is probably the most unique out of all these different types of bangs! Now keep in mind that as much as you might love this style (and I definitely do!), it won’t work unless you have naturally curly hair.

Sadly, this look is just not in the cards for me, but if you have naturally curly hair then you should definitely consider this look. You can always straighten your bangs on alternate days.

These types of bangs are straight across without much angling but are slightly chopped to create curl.

9. Thick Angled Bangs

types of bangs: medium

These types of bangs are pretty thick, choppy bangs with a decent amount of angle. You’ll want to angle the bangs almost right away to get lots of long pieces that from your face.

These bangs super trendy and European. I really love seeing them on IG!

8. Long, Straight Angled Bangs

These are exactly blunt bangs but they’re not super chopped either. You want really wispy bangs for this style and will need to take some time when styling so they lay on your forehead perfectly.

You also want a good amount of angling around the face. Keep in mind that these bangs look best with a lot of accessories (earrings, necklaces, etc.) and eye makeup when your hair is up. They can look heavy and thick with your hair down.

7. Thin Curly Bangs

These bangs are super thin and wispy; they’re also styled naturally. These types of bangs will work if you have hair that’s close to her natural texture. Straight here just won’t do it – trust me, I’ve tried!

You’ll want a really thin style with only a tiny bit of angling and chop to enhance the curl.

6. Long Sideswept Bangs

These bangs are ultra-trendy and are easy to care for. You’ll want thick, long, angled bangs that can be swept to the side.

The great thing about these types of bangs is that they can be styled regularly as well using a round brush.

5. Thin, Long, Angled Bangs

I showed another angle of these bangs before, but this one looks a bit different. Here, you can see that the bangs are choppy only on the very ends and have a lot of angling. Make sure to show your stylist if you want this much angling since most won’t just automatically cut all of these pieces.

Again, these bangs look best when your hair is worn up. It’s literally what they’re made for.

4. Ultra-Long Angled Bangs

These are ultra-long bangs that are angled all the way through. I love having bangs like this when I style them with my round brush because I can flip them any way I like.

This is a great hairstyle if you want something that will frame your face but still look edgy.

3. Wispy Angled Bangs

These bangs are wispy and a bit shorter. They also have a lot of face-framing pieces. Unlike a few other different types of bangs on this list, this type is actually super manageable for everyday life.

2. Ultra-Long Bangs

These wispy bangs are super long. Compared to other different types of bangs, these might be the hardest to deal with day-to-day. They’re constantly in your eyes and just never seem to stay styled correctly.

With that being said, if this is truly the look you want, then go for it! You’ll need to use a small round brush to style your bangs. Ask for a long cut over your eyes with angling on the sides.

These bangs are relatively thin but still cover the whole forehead. They’re slightly chopped; super blunt bangs won’t work for this style.

1. Wispy Medium Length

These vintage, wispy bangs are medium-thick and are mostly straight across with just a tiny angle. They hit right above the eyes, so they’ll stay out of your face but are still super trendy.

Styling Different Types Of Bangs + Common Problems:

Like I said, I had a lot of trouble styling my bangs at first. They simply wouldn’t lay right on my head and they got greasy really quickly.

Here are some common issues with styling different types of bangs and how I fix them.

My Bangs Won’t Lay Flat:

If you bangs are going every which way, try using either a round brush with a blow dryer or a good flat iron. Make sure that you mimic the angle you want your bangs to have when you’re using the flat iron so they don’t stick straight out.

If you’re using the brush and find that they’re too puffy or rounded then you can use a flat iron to flatten your bangs out a bit.

My Bangs Are Too Flat:

If your hair is naturally flat then your bangs might hang limply on your forehead. Don’t use a flat iron in this scenario; instead you need to use a round brush and blow out your bangs to have a bit of a curve and some volume.

My Bangs Are Greasy:

This is the most common problem for anyone who gets bangs. They’re always getting greasy! I swear, my face will be as dry as a desert, and I still have greasy bangs after half a day.

There are a few easy fixes for this. First off, wash your bangs every morning before styling. If you don’t wash your hair daily then you can wash just your bangs in the sink using shampoo and a really light conditioner. Don’t put too much product on your hair; a light heat protectant is fine, but anything oily will make greasy bangs impossible to get rid of.

Next, try using face powder to combat grease. I dab a bit of face powder on my forehead and even brush some over my bangs until the grease it soaked up. It sounds weird but it works and is a great solution when you’re not at home. I always carry powder in my purse to salvage greasy bangs!

If you are at home and really don’t want to wash your bangs, you can also try using dry shampoo. Depending on the texture of your hair this can definitely mess up your hairstyle, but I find that dry shampoo works quite well on greasy bangs when I’m going for the natural look.

My Bangs Are Too Short:

I can’t actually help you too much with this one. Sorry! Your hair simply needs to grow.

I will say that choppy, short bangs look slightly better than blunt, short bangs. If you add a bit of choppiness, they might actually look artsy and edgy rather than wrong or dated.

My Bangs Are Too Long:

So this issue is kind of easy to fix. Cut them! I know it’s wicked scary to cut your own bangs at home, but it’s virtually impossible to wait until you get your hair cut unless you see your hairdresser every 2-3 weeks.

If you’re just beginning, look up tutorials on YouTube and only cut a tiny bit. Don’t go chopping if it doesn’t look right. Instead, wait and hour and sit on it. Sometimes the hair goes into shock and needs to relax a bit before you can really see the end result.

I definitely recommend trimming your bangs dry; most hairstylists will too, even though every other kind of haircut is best with wet hair. You can’t really see how long your bangs will be when they’re wet so it just doesn’t work that well.

You can use kitchen scissors but you can also buy inexpensive shears on Ulta if you know you’ll be trimming your bangs often.

Alternatively, if you really don’t want to cut them and can’t get to your stylist, use a small round brush and curl your bangs towards your face. Giving them volume will also make them appear slightly shorter. I use the 1 inch brush for this.

My Bangs Make My Eyes Look Small:

When you get bangs, you’ll quickly realize that the eye makeup game is completely different. What would have looked overkill before is now totally acceptable, and too little eye makeup means that your eyes get lost underneath your bangs.

The quick remedy for this is to simply add more eye makeup! I like to do a smokey eye with cat eye liner. Don’t be afraid to do a dramatic look, even for daytime.

The thicker the bangs, the more eye makeup you need for your eyes to stand out.

My Bangs Take Forever To Style:

Yup, this is a problem we all have when we first get bangs. I spent literal hours on them and they still looked horrible!

The first step is to figure out how to style them in a way that you like. Play around with a round brush, a flat iron, the natural look, etc., and get your go-to look down pat.

If you know exactly how you like to do them when you’re going out to dinner or on a date but find that your bangs take too long to style on a daily basis, there are a few things you can do.

First of all, try blowdrying your bangs so that they’re natural then brush them to the side. You can also use a round brush for this if your prefer. I split mine on each side of my face and they come out similar to curtain bangs. This only takes about 3 minutes and is much easier because they don’t have to lay perfectly.

Alternatively, you can use a variety of different clips on the days when you just really don’t have time. I clip mine up way too often, but I sometimes just need to get them off my face. There’s no harm in that!

My Bangs Just Look Wrong:

First of all, go through all of the issues above and make sure it’s absolutely none of those. If your bangs still look wrong on your face then you probably have the wrong type of bangs.

Everyone’s face structure is different so there’s no way to say exactly what bangs will work for you. Try to figure out what looks wrong about them and compare your bangs to other examples in this post. What type would look better?

Luckily, bangs are really easy to fix because they grow so quickly. If you mess up, you’re stuck with the wrong types of bangs for 2 weeks max.

In conclusion, there are a wide variety of bangs styles to choose from that can complement every hair texture and face shape. Whether you have straight, curly, thick, or fine hair, there is a bangs style that will suit you perfectly. It is important to consider your face shape when selecting a bangs style to ensure it enhances your overall look. With so many options available, you can easily switch up your hairstyle and add a fresh new look to your appearance. Choose the bangs style that best fits your personality and style, and enjoy the versatility and added dimension they bring to your hair.
