French curl braids are a protective braided hairstyle characterized by loose, wavy, silky and voluminous bouncy curly ends.

Despite the misleading name, French curl braids do not originate from France.

The 90’s hairstyle popularised by Nollywood stars in Africa and singer/songwriter Brandy, Beyonce and other Hollywood stars stems from Africa.

Much like many of the old hairstyles that are making a comeback with new names, French curl braids were originally called Nollywood braids.

While it’s unclear why the box braids variant was renamed, French curl braids are trending on popular social networks like TikTok and Instagram and we have all the details you need.

What hair do I need for French curl braids?

Aptly named after the renamed hairstyle, you’ll need 6 to 8 packs of French curl braiding hair.

You’ll also need:

  1. Shine n jam.
  2. Rat tail comb.
  3. Mousse.

How to do Knotless French Curl braids

Start by parting clean and stretched hair into your desired sizes using a rat tail comb.

Apply shine n jam to tame flyaways and to give you clean/well-defined parts.

Just like you would in the knotless braiding method, start by plaiting the natural hair and feed in the French curl braiding hair gradually as you move along the length of the braid.

Once you have your desired length braided, tie a knot using a strand of the hair three to four times at the end of the braid leaving 4 to 6 inches of the curls out. This will make sure the braids don’t unravel.

You can also apply some glue to the strand of hair you’ll use to tie the knot to make it more secure.

“Where you tie the knot at the end of the braid is dependent on how long your hair is,” says Mariama, a Texas based Expert braider. “If your hair is long, you’ll want to make sure you braid a couple more inches below where your hair ends before tying the knot. This will ensure you won’t cut your hair when it’s time to take out the braids.”

Mariama also recommends using your previous braid as a reference for where to tie the knot on the next braid for uniformity purposes.

Repeat the same method all over the head until you’re done.

After you’re done, trim any flyaways using a pair of scissors, apply some mousse, lay your edges and you’re ready to rock your new hairstyle.

How to do layered French Curl braids

To get the layered French curl braids look, you’ll need to buy the French curl braiding hair in different lengths.

Ideal length mixtures can be 12″, 18″, and 24″ or 12″, 18″, 24″ and 30″.

You’ll then ask your stylist to use the 30″ hair at the back, the 24″ and 18″ mid-back and centre then the 12″ hair at the front.

The curly ends will then be trimmed as desired.

The end result will give you a nice layered look regardless of how you style them.

How to Knotless French curl braids (no feed in method)

If you’re a new braider or you find the feed-in method challenging, the no feed-in knotless method should be easier for you.

Start by splitting your parted section into two halves horizontally. That’s one half at the top and one at the bottom.

Place your braiding hair in-between the two halves and then start plaiting the natural hair like you would in the feed in method.

After braiding the hair three times, take half of the hair on the right and braid it in then do the same thing on the left.

Repeat the same method to braid in the rest of the hair that was left out and then braid the hair down normally to your desired length.

Just like in the first method, use a strand of hair to tie a knot where the braid ends and the curl begins.
