Why Should You Use a Cuticle Oil?
The skin around your nails can become dry and cracked due to hand washing, excessive cold weather, or the sun. Using a good hand cream may not be sufficient to keep your cuticles healthy. This is because the skin around the nail needs extra moisture since it’s more delicate and prone to crack.
Cuticle oils help to keep the skin around the nails hydrated, reducing the likelihood of small cuts and cracks, and making your nails less likely to chip or break.
Cuticle oil also helps to increase blood circulation around your nails which can help to stimulate nail growth. When applied regularly it can improve the health and appearance of the nail beds.
If you regularly paint your nails, you may see additional benefits in using cuticle oil since it can make your nail polish last for longer!
After testing out dozens of different cuticle oils and butters over the years, the cuticle oils below made it into my top five! I hope this post is useful in helping you find the right cuticle oil for you!
1. Milk & Honey Cuticle Oil
Buy from: Nail Polish Direct | Sally Beauty | Sleek Shop
The Milk & Honey Cuticle Oil is my top recommendation if you have dry and hardened skin which is prone to splitting. The product contains lactic acid from milk which is a chemical exfoliant that removes dead skin cells and improves the texture of the skin.
This oil also contains a combination of honey, sunflower seed oil, cotton seed oil and safflower oil which deeply moisturises and products the delicate skin around the nail.
Why I Liked it
This cuticle oil comes in a huge bottle and a little goes a long way, so it will last you a really long time! It also has a lovely sweet scent which is not overpowering. The scent is warm and sweet like honey.
I used this oil daily for over a month and found my nails and cuticles quickly became healthy and strong. My nails along looked shiny and almost glass like!
I was worried that this oil would be greasy since I saw other reviews online which described it as a “thick oil”. I found however that it absorbed very well into my skin and left no greasy residue.
I also liked the shape of the bottle. It has a flat bottom, but is also partially flat on one side. This means as you are coming to the end of the bottle you can sit the bottle on its side to get the rest of the product out. I thought this was handy, and a well thought out design!
The product also has a dropper instead of a brush which is more hygienic!
Who it’s For
I would say this oil is definitely for you if your cuticles are cracked, dry or sore. It is also a great choice if you bite your nails and need a product to add nourishment and encourage growth.
If you are on a budget, this wasn’t the cheapest oil I found however the bottle is huge and you only need a tiny amount so it will last you forever!
Milk & Honey Cuticle Oil 75ml (2.5oz)
- conditions and nourishes the cuticles
- honey naturally soothes and moisturises
- protects and nourishes cuticles
- heals dry cracked cuticles
- lightly scented oil

2. Creative Nail Design Solar Oil Nail and Cuticle Conditioner
Buy from: Nail Polish Direct | Ulta | FeelUnqiue
The CND cuticle oil is one of my top recommended oils since it’s excellent at strengthening brittle nails and damaged skin. The formula contains jojoba oil, vitamin E and almond oil which help to reduce the signs of ageing and add hydration.
The almond oil and jojoba oil in this product make the nails more flexible and less likely to break. The added vitamin E helps to repair damage and make the cuticles and surrounding skin healthier.
Why I Liked it
I had to include this product in my top recommendations since it does a great job at leaving your nails supple and strong. It comes with a brush instead of a dropper which allows you to precisely apply the product to the areas that are dry.
This oil has a lovely almond smell and absorbs really quickly into the skin.
I gave this product a 4.5 star rating instead of 5 stars because a brush is less hygienic than a dropper.
Who it’s For
If you are trying to grow your nails this product helps to add strength and provide the perfect environment for growth!
This oil is also excellent for moisturising dry cuticles and improving overall nail health. It’s roughly the same price as the Milk and Honey Oil but you may prefer this one if you’d rather use a brush than a dropper to apply the product.
Creative Nail Design Solar Oil Nail and Cuticle Conditioner 7.3 ml
- Award-winning cuticle oil is infused with jojoba oil and vitamin E
- Nails hold color and enhancements better, feel stronger and more flexible.
- Jojoba oil carries the vitamin E deeply into the skin, reducing visible signs of aging
- creates stronger, healthier nails and hydrated cuticle area.
- Repeated use drives the oils deeper in the natural nail

3. Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Moisutrising Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream
Buy from: Burt’s Bees | Boots | FeelUnqiue
This product made it into my list of best cuticle oils despite the fact that it’s a cream rather than an oil! I wanted to include it however because the formula does contain oils, and some of my readers may prefer the texture of a cream rather than an oil.
The product has the consistency of a buttery cream but actually is rich in oils including: sweet almond oil, lemon peel oil, and sunflower oil. It also contains beeswax, cocoa seed butter and vitamin E to soften the cuticles and strengthen brittle nails.
Why I Liked it
This cream has a lovely fresh lemon scent which leaves your hands and nails feeling fresh and healthy. I especially loved that this product comes in environmentally friendly packaging!
This was the least expensive out of all the cuticle products I have recommended, and a little goes a long way! The tin is also small and light enough to fit in your handbag – so it’s great it you want something to reapply while you’re out and about!
Compared with some of the other oils I tested, this cream is slightly greasy when you first apply it, but it does absorb quite quickly.
Who it’s For
If you’re on a budget, this cream is a great option! It’s also excellent for travelling since it fits neatly into a handbag. I kept this product in my top five recommendations since it’s my top choice for anyone on a budget, or if you want something that’s environmentally friendly.
If you get sore and dry cuticles, this cream is packed with natural ingredients that promote healing and healthy nail growth. If you prefer citrus smells you may also like this product more than the other oils.

Buy from: OPI UK | Boots | FeelUnqiue
This is another product which is great for applying on the go! The OPI ProSpa Nail and Cuticle Oil To-Go is very fast absorbing and extremely nourishing. It contains grape seed oil, sesame, kukui, sunflower and cupuaçu oils to promote healthy cuticles.
All of the ProSpa range from OPI is made with the Cupuacu superfruit which contains nine essential fatty acids helping to deeply moisturise your nail and skin. Their cuticle oil also contains white tea extracts which help to prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin, helping your hands and feet to look younger.
Why I Liked it
This product has a gel-like consistency, and comes in a tube with an applicator brush. It has a lovely rose scent and absorbs quickly into the skin.
This product made it into my top five since it leaves the cuticles and nails amazingly nourished and glowing. It helps to deeply moisturise and hydrate the cuticle area and surrounding skin, and reduce any signs of ageing.

5. Cutex Hydrating Cuticle Oil
Buy from: Tesco | Wilko | Look Fantastic
I chose the Cutex Hydrating Cuticle Oil as one of my top cuticle oils since it can be used both on bare nails or on top of your manicure. It is a blend of vitamin E and sweet almond oil which nourishes the nail and cuticle. This product is specially formulated to target rough cuticles, and dry, brittle nails.
Why I Liked it
I loved that this product came in a huge bottle so it will last you a long time, and it’s also very affordable. It comes with a brush applicator which some people find helps them to apply the oil more precisely.
I found this oil did a great job at prolonging my manicure whilst keeping my nails and cuticle area heathy. Out of all the oils I tested, I would recommend this one if you regularly have nail treatment such as gel nails.
I used this after having my shellac nails applied and found that it helped my gel to last longer. I think this product is often used and recommended by nail salons.
Who it’s For
This is a great choice if you are looking for something to apply after a manicure. The product helps to make your nail polish last longer, as well as protecting and strengthening the nail.
If your nails often split or break, you may also get good results from this oil since I found it gave me more flexible nails which were much stronger.

Comparison Table
The comparison table below puts the five different cuticle oils side by side so you can compare the price and the key ingredients. The table also shows the application method, so you can see whether the oil comes with a brush, dropper, or if you apply it with your fingers.
My personal favourite is the Milk and Honey Cuticle Oil since this product was so effective and leaving my nails and cuticles healthy and glowing. I prefer using a dropper than a brush since I think it’s more hygienic than using a brush or your fingers. This product is also great value for money since you get so much in the bottle!
