What hair do you use for invisible locs?

You can use Cuban hair, Marley hair or pre fluffed freetress hair.

Depending on the size and length you’re going for, you’ll need 1 3x pack of the cuban hair or 6 to 7 individual packs of Marley hair.

How long do invisible locs last for?

Invisible locs can last for 3 to 4 weeks with proper maintenance. This is largely dependent on your hair type.

Are invisible locs tight?

If you or your stylist doesn’t twist them too tight at the roots, invisible locs aren’t tight.

What’s the difference between invisible locs and faux locs?

Invisible locs which are in fact not locs are started in a flat twist like motion using your own hair and then transitioned into two strand twists using Marley or Cuban hair while a lot of faux locs (fake locs) variants like soft locs rely on the usage of pre made locs or a finished look that resembles natural dreadlocks. The difference is in the braiding methods and hair used. Basically, invisible locs are twists and faux locs are locs.

What’s the difference between invisible locs and Senegalese twists?

Invisible locs start as a flat twist before they are transitioned into two strand twists while Senegalese twists start as two strand twists from the roots. While you can use Marley hair for Senegalese twists, most people prefer using regular braiding hair.

There are two different methods you can use to do invisible locs.

The first one involves the use of a crochet needle and the second one doesn’t. We’ll look at both.

How to do invisible locs (crochet method)

Start by parting clean, moisturized and stretched hair into four different sections.

Two sections at the front and two at the back parted down the middle.

This will make it a lot more easier for you to further part the hair since this hairstyle involves a lot of parting.

Depending on which section you choose to start with, part a sizeable chunk of hair and further divide it into two.

Use shine n jam every time you do the parting to ensure you’re getting clean and neat parts.

The two parts you further divide the sizeable chunk of hair into should ideally be square parts.

Start working on one of the sections you parted in two.

Part a small bit of hair under the section and do a natural hair braid or plait if you like.

The plait part that is, not braiding the small bit of hair. This is not optional in this method.

After doing a braid/plait, crochet the Marley hair into the braid and pull it through.

Use shine n jam to “blend” both the hair at the upper section and the small braided one that you crocheted hair into at the bottom. You’re going to twist both of these as one.

Start doing a flat twist at the roots and keep twisting the hair to a reasonable length.

Please note: the hair in both sections has to be twisted in the same direction in the first round of twisting.

Use the duck bill hair clips to make sure your twist doesn’t unravel as you work on the other section.

Repeat the same method on the other section and start doing a two strand twist using both sections.

The key is too maintain a good grip to ensure your twist doesn’t unravel.

Pro tip: you can leave a slightly wider gap at the part where both individual twists are further twisted into one to avoid putting tension on you or your client’s scalp.

The wide gap will slowly close as you further twist the hair.

A lot of stylists have been opting to do loc knot barrel twists at the bottom to give the invisible locs an extra pop.

We did a step by step tutorial of how to do loc knots barrels here.

How to do invisible locs (no crochet method)

Just like in method one, start by parting cleaned, moisturised and stretched hair into four different sections.

Two sections at the front and two at the back. This will make the parting process very easy.

Please note: Use shine n jam on your parted sections to make sure you’re getting a clean finish.

Part a sizeable chunk hair from whichever section you prefer to start with and further divide it into two.

Apply shine n jam on the section you further divided into two and start working on one side.

Do a flat twist on the one you choose to start with from the roots to a sizeable length.

Use duck bill hair clips to make sure the twist doesn’t unravel as you repeat the same method on the other side.

After you’ve done flat twists on both sides, feed in the Marley hair in between both twists and start doing two strand twists using both.

If just like in the first method you prefer having loc knot barrels at the end, bend the hair upwards, hold it at the base and start twisting downwards.
